Main Features of Neodymium Magnets
1. Neodymium Magnets popularly known as rare earth magnets are the strongest rare earth magnets and the strongest magnets in the world.
2. Neodymium Magnets are available in various grades VIZ N35, N40, N42, N45, N48, N50 & N52 Higher the number the stronger the magnet is.
3. Any kind of machining is not recommended on Neodymium Magnets. Neodymium Magnets are very hard and brittle & any kind of machining can and will break or damage the magnet. Also the heat produced by machining is hot enough to demagnetize the magnet.
4. Soldering & welding should not be done of Neodymium Magnets. The high heat will demagnetize the magnets and the magnets could catch fire.
5. Neodymium Magnets are sensitive to heat. Depending on the grade of the magnet, the heat will demagnetize the magnet. Neodymium Magnets heated above 80ËšC or 176ËšF will demagnetize and lose their strength.
6. Salt water is not good for NdFeB magnets as the Nickel plating will corrode rapidly (In less than 48 hrs). If a longer time is required Epoxy plating is recommended.
7. As long as one does not over heat Neodymium Magnets they will continue to be strong. Strength lose would be less than 1% of their original strength every 10 years.
8. Both poles of Neodymium Magnets are equal in strength.
9. When two or more magnets are stacked together they become stronger, however they will not be proportionally stronger all the time due to the nature of the material.
10. The gauss of Neodymium Magnets varies depending on the size of magnet.
11. Neodymium Magnets are coated to prevent oxidation and rust. Neodymium Magnets are made of neodymium, iron& baron. The iron will oxidize quickly and will rust over time; therefore coating is provided to protect the magnet from rusting. Following type of coating is in prevalent on Neodymium Magnets:
A. Nickel (Ni-Cu-Ni)
A very durable multilayer combination of nickel, copper, nickel. The most common plating
B. Zinc Plating (Zn)
2nd most common plating, Zinc is a standalone plating with only one layer. It is a self- sacrificing coating, meaning when the material corrodes the outside turns white creating a durable layer of protection.
C. Epoxy (Ni-Cu-Be)
Epoxy plating is multilayered in Nickel, Copper, and Epoxy. Great for outdoor applications. However it is not very abrasion resistant and prone to scratching.
D. Gold (Ni-Cu-Au)
Well known for its corrosion resistance. Layered in Nickel, Copper & Gold on top. Works very well in water applications.
The gold layer is very thin and adds only a few cents per magnet.
Plastic is the most corrosion resistant. However it is thicker than other plating. A mold is required to create the plastic shell.
